H1N1 (Swine Flu) Influenza

September 14, 2009

Dear Parents,

We have had a confirmed case of H1N1 at St. Mary’s.  The child who has been diagnosed is in the PreK 3.  The child came down with symptoms after school ended on Friday.  The child will not be readmitted to school until he/she has been fever free for 24 hours without the uses of fever-reducing medicine.  The child in PreK does have siblings in other classes, but they have no flu symptoms.

You may want to watch your own children for symptoms of the H1N1 flu –

  • Fever (usually 102,  but can rise to 104)
  • Cough (often present)
  • Muscle aches (often severe)
  • Tiredness or lethargy
  • Extreme exhaustion (sudden onset)
  • Runny nose (sometimes)
  • Sneezing (sometimes)
  • Sore Throat (sometimes)

One of the best defenses against the flu is good hand washing.  We are stepping up our hand washing and surface cleaning this year at St. Mary’s.  If your child is not feeling well, please keep them home from school – we will be erring on the side of caution with sending children home from school if they are exhibiting any flu-like symptoms.

Peace,
